  • Beg Rawlings to rejoin party – NDC executives urged

A former District Chief Executive for Sekyere East, Kwadwo Addae, has asked the rank and file of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to apologise to party founder and former President Jerry John Rawlings to aid the rebuilding of the NDC.

According to him, the neglect of Mr Rawlings ahead of last year’s polls resulted in the massive defeat of the party, therefore if the NDC will make any inroads in the next general elections, the executive must find ways of reconciling with the former President.

A statement he issued on Friday May 26 said: “Ever since the NDC lost the election to the NPP, I have had the opportunity to talk once to Dr Kwabena Duffuor, former Finance Minister, on phone and I told him that any attempt to build the NDC to a winsome political party, we need to seek the active involvement of H.E Jerry John Rawlings; without him, any attempt will be a total failure.

“Rawlings is the founder and pillar of NDC. We must not lose sight of Rawlings signing the manifesto of NDC with his blood. H.E Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo, in his desperate wish to become the President of Ghana, saw the urgent need to get closer to the Rawlings family, first through Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings.

“NDC activists couldn’t be smart enough to see through the actions and inactions of Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings and withdrew from Nana Konadu and disgraced her and the Rawlings family. Those who felt the NDC could stand the test of all the wrangling in the NDC without Rawlings and his family should have known that NDC could not do anything without Rawlings. Without Rawlings, NDC would definitely be existing only as an opposition party. The opportunity is there for serious NDC members to shed their pride and go to Jerry John Rawlings and be bold to say to him: ‘Rawlings, we are sorry for all that has happened to you in the party (Abofra dwons? gu n’agya nan so a ontwa ntwene)’ and then apologise to him to plead with him and talk to his wife and join hands for the revival of the NDC.”

In a subsequent interview with Chief Jerry Forson, host of Ghana Yensom on Accra100.5FM on Friday May 26, Mr Addae said: “Dr Kwesi Botchway’s team should take the initiative for the survival of the party. Recently when some disgruntled people put it on social media platforms that H.E. Jerry John Rawlings was dead, it got me shocked. Thank God it turned out to be false. If it had been true that Rawlings had died, NDC in its present situation would also have died with him. His burial would have been the burial of NDC. We must act as the prodigal son and shed our pride and go to Rawlings – founding father and pillar of the NDC – and simply tell him to forgive and forget.”

  • NHIS to pay service providers today

The National Health Insurance service providers who are owed by the Authority will begin getting their monies today.

This is according to the new Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Samuel Annor.

Dr. Annor said the authority is paying two months of the arrears it owes service providers. The Authority owes the service providers some GHc1.2 billion covering a 12-month period of arrears.

Dr. Annor told Citi News that all other arrears will be cleared in due course.

“Since the current government assumed office, this payment which most subscribers will be receiving on Monday will be the fourth payment since we assumed office. The one going this week will probably be twice of what they received during the previous one.”

“Previously they were being paid maybe one month at a time, they might receive two months this time and probably by June or July there will be more payments. So we are working along the clock to reduce the debt stock,” he added.

NHIS is broke, we can’t pay our debts

Dr. Annor, had earlier disclosed that the scheme was broke and unable to pay service providers.

“The NHIA is at a stage where one will say it almost bankrupt; in that we have no reserves and we owe people so much. And this has come about because we have increased our membership so much but we have not increased the funding appropriately,” he added.

  • Gov’t worried about Alavanyo-Nkonya killings – VR Minister

The Volta regional minister, Dr. Archibald Letsa, said Monday that the region’s Security Council is worried about the recent scourge of killings in the conflict prone Alavanyo-Nkonya townships.

More disturbing, he added, is the unwillingness of residents of the aforementioned communities to assist security agencies to apprehend the perpetrators.

The Minister’s disclosure comes at the back of the killing of a 62-year-old woman at the area Saturday May 20, 2017 and a 15-year-old a week earlier.

“These things are happening in broad daylight and we are worried,” he told Francis Abban on Morning Starr Monday May 22, 2017.

He added that until the perpetrators are “apprehended and punished” the ghastly killings will linger on.

“So we are appealing to the community members to provide information because these people perpetrating the crime are known. We believe they are known…But when the security agencies go to the communities they are so tight lipped and don’t want to provide information,” noted Dr. Letsa.

    Killings Beyond land dispute

According to the minister, the killings has nothing to do with the protracted land dispute.

“We have gone beyond land issues now,” he said, adding: “It is obvious it is a tit for that situation we are experiencing now.”

    Curfew reviewed

Meanwhile, the Minister of the Interior, Ambrose Dery, has on the advice of the Volta Regional Security Council and by Executive Instrument, renewed the curfew hours imposed on the Alavanyo and Nkonya townships from 8.00 pm to 5.30 am.

The curfew takes effect from Sunday, May 21, 2017.

  • Vin Diesel honours Paul Walker in MTV Generation Award speech

Vin Diesel paid homage to his late friend and co-star Paul Walker as he accepted the Generation Award on behalf of The Fast and Furious franchise at the MTV Movie and TV Awards in Los Angeles Sunday.

The 49-year-old A-lister was flanked by co-stars Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson and Jordana Brewster as he remembered his late friend, who died in an auto wreck November 30, 2013 in Valencia, California.

‘I could never stand on this stage and talk about Fast and Furious without giving love to my brother Pablo, our brother Pablo; we hope you’re proud,’ said Diesel, who’s played Dominic Toretto in the mega-successful series the past 16 years.

The xXx actor looked back to the early days of the drag racing-oriented film anthology.

‘In 2002, I was standing on this stage and MTV had given Paul Walker and I an award for Best Duo, and now 15 years later, I’m with my whole family and you’re giving us the Generation Award,’ Diesel told the crowd.

The actor noted how audiences were drawn to the diverse demographics of his film franchise, which continues to set revenue records in the wake of the latest installment in the series, The Fate of the Furious.
‘I gotta thank a generation that was willing to accept this multicultural franchise, where it didn’t matter what color your skin was or what country you were from – when you’re family, you’re family,’ he said.

Last month, Diesel said that the franchise’s massive success – personified by high-profile castmates who later joined the series, such as Dwayne Johnson, Charlize Theron and Jason Statham – was attributable to Walker.
Diesel, at a New York screening at Radio City Music Hall, said ‘a lot of great talent in this movie’ wouldn’t have been possible ‘if it wasn’t for the decades of work that my brother Pablo put into this franchise. When you see this movie, know that this is from love.’

He said that ‘there wasn’t a second we made this movie, not a minute … not a day that went by that we weren’t thinking about our brother, Pablo, and how to bring him into the movie and how to represent him and to make something that he will be proud of.’

  • Gov’t will ensure ICT-driven educ system – Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has reiterated the commitment of his government to providing the youth of Ghana with a functional, ICT-driven educational system, that constantly responds to the challenges and evolution of modern science and technology.

According to President Akufo-Addo, “my government’s focus is to work to provide every school and community with an ICT infrastructure to keep them in touch with global trends, and also equip our youth with the skills that will be necessary in Ghana’s economic transformation.”

He made this known on Wednesday, April 26, 2017, when he commissioned the Akyem Wenchi Educational Circuit Community Information Centre, at Soabe, in the Eastern Region, the very first project he is commissioning as President of the Republic.

The President noted that his government, as is stated in the NPP’s manifesto of 2016, intends to improve the facilities and the curriculum for ICT education at all levels. Government, he added, also intends to ensure that all teachers have ICT competence.

“I am delighted, therefore, to commission this project, because it is the first to put into expression the NPP’s commitment on ICT and Education,” he said.

He continued, “I am certain that this community information centre will have a positive impact on learning in the Akyem Wenchi Educational Circuit, and will increase flexibility so that students can access education, regardless of time and geographical barriers,” he said.

President Akufo-Addo noted that “if a student studying in one of our communities, for example, wishes to find out what the latest technology in electroplating is, his or her problems could be minimized if he or she had an opportunity to use a computer equipped with the services of the internet. This is because a world of rich and abundant knowledge will lay before him or her at the click of an icon on a computer.

ICT in education has a multiplier effect, by enhancing learning and providing students with new sets of skills; by reaching students with poor or no access (especially those in rural areas); by facilitating and improving the training of teachers; and by minimizing costs associated with the delivery of traditional instruction.”

Thus, to enhance access to information to users of the Akyem Wenchi Information Centre, the President revealed that the Ghana Investment Fund For Electronic Communications (GIFEC) has equipped the centre with access to free internet services.

“In the not too distant future, the free WiFi coverage policy will be extended to senior secondary and tertiary institutions nationwide dedicated to learning, administration and enhancing the capacity to do research,” the President assured, much to the delight of the gathering.

President Akufo-Addo challenged the youth of Soabe to take advantage of the opportunities that will be afforded to them by the facility.

“You are living in perhaps the most exciting time in our history, so please make the best out of it. Some say this is our time. I say this is your time and tomorrow will be the time of your children. We want to build a new Ghanaian civilization, where fair opportunities are given to all to live dignified, productive lives by dint of their hard work, creativity and sense of enterprise. It is a bright period in the Ghanaian journey,” he noted.

The Information Centre, constructed by the Prof. & Mrs. S.K.B. Asante Educational Trust Fund, boasts 40 desktop computers.

The Information Centre is not the only project undertaken by the Prof. & Mrs. S.K.B. Asante Educational Trust Fund in this town. In 1996, the Fund was responsible for the electrification project of Soabe. Adjoining communities, such as Akyem Wenchi and Kusi, have also been beneficiaries of scholarship packages for students, the construction of 13 teachers’ quarters, a library and a modern police post.

  • Increase sale of Ghanaian goods at malls – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo, has expressed hope that the newly commissioned Kumasi City Mall will not be a place only for the sale of imported goods, but also for the sale of locally produced ones.

He said “It would be truly commendable if, by the end of the first year of its operation, at least 20% of the goods that are sold here should be of Ghanaian origin, and the percentages increase as Ghanaian industrial production rapidly expands.”

Delivering a speech at a ceremony Wednesday to official launch the Kumasi City Mall, the President bemoaned the fact that Ghana continues to be a retailer of cheap imported goods, whilst the capacity of local producers remains weak and their products suffer low patronage.

“I know very well that, in some of our malls and supermarkets across the country, carrots sold, for example, are imported from Holland. Some of the dressed chickens on sale have also come from Brazil. Indeed, the items originating from Ghana and from our local entrepreneurs constitute barely a paltry 5% of goods on sale,” he lamented.

He noted, however, that all over the world, new enterprises, such as the Kumasi City Mall, have spawned the creation of jobs and investments, and triggered increased local spending.

“Supermarkets and many shopping malls in several parts of the world, particularly in the advanced economies, have become magnets for production. It is my hope that the Kumasi City Mall will not only be a place for the sale of imported goods, but also Ghanaian goods,” he stressed.

To this end, he encouraged shop owners and supermarkets, like Shoprite, to increase the proportion of Ghanaian goods sold at the shop, by getting more local farmers and entrepreneurs to produce for them.

“We want Kumasi to be a place of work again, not just a place where people come for funerals. We want to bring jobs back to this city, and restore Kumasi to its position, once again, of being The Garden City. The support government gives to the private sector is intended to translate into greater economic activities of our entrepreneurs, producers and farmers. Kumasi City Mall should bear witness of this increased activity,” he said.

President Akufo-Addo at the Woodin shop at KCM

Whilst acknowledging the challenges confronting the country’s economy, the President pledged that his government would liberate the energies of the youth by harnessing talent and building skills, inspiring innovation and risk taking, connecting to global value chains and, most importantly, nurturing a deep sense of patriotism.

“Last month, I launched the programme for Planting for Food and Jobs in Goaso, in the Brong Ahafo Region. Organise yourselves and get involved in this initiative. I am certain that my admonition to shop owners of this mall will not go unheard. They will surely buy from you, if your produce meets the standard, which I am confident it can,” he urged.

Take advantage of gov’t’s new focus

Akufo-Addo continued that the belief of his government is that “given an enabling environment, the creativity and sense of enterprise of the Ghanaian will enable us to build a strong, powerful economy which can deliver a good, dignified standard of living to our people.”

The President explained that since Governor Guggisberg left the country some 90 years ago, the basic structure of Ghana’s economy has remained largely unchanged.

He added that Ghana’s economy cannot grow if it remains, primarily, a raw material producing and exporting country, explaining that “we cannot create the hundreds and hundreds of thousands of jobs for the masses of our young people if the sustenance of our economy is import dependent and import driven, as well as being dependent on raw material exports.”

President Akufo-Addo at the Woodin shop at KCM

As has been made evident in the first Budget of his presidency, the Asempa Budget, Akufo-Addo stressed that the economic programme of his government is hinged on the addition of value to the country’s raw materials in a process of rapid industrialization, as agricultural production and productivity is enhanced.

“Our priority is to do all we can to give our entrepreneurs the certainty of a positive business environment, devoid of arbitrary and irrational policy initiatives, so that they can do what they should do best – INVEST IN THE NUMEROUS OPPORTUNITIES TO CREATE JOBS AND PROPSPERITY,” he said.

He assured that “the initiatives introduced in the Budget are aimed at stimulating private sector activity, and shifting the focus of our economy from taxation to production. To this end, I urge the private sector to take advantage of this new focus, which is offering opportunities to local ingenuity and production.”

  • Official: Akufo-Addo outdoors Sophia Akuffo as new CJ

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has announced  Justice Sophia Akuffo as the new Chief Justice of Ghana.

The President who made the announcement Friday said he believes the Supreme Court Justice will be fair and independent at her new job,  as she has been throughout her career.

“I have known Justice Sophia Akuffo well, for over forty years. Indeed, she was my first junior in practice, as barristers call their work. She impressed me considerably with her hard work, her capacity for detailed research, her independence of mind and spirit, her honesty and integrity, her deep-seated respect for the rule of law, and her abiding belief in the sovereignty of Almighty God. I believe these are the qualities which sustained her brilliant career as a lawyer that propelled her to the notice of the 1st President of the 4th Republic, His Excellency Jerry John Rawlings, who appointed her to the Supreme Court on 30th November, 1995, some 22 years ago.

“She has been one of the leading lights of the Court since her appointment, and her contribution to the Court’s work and the growth of our nation’s jurisprudence has been extensive. She has enriched her judicial experience by serving with credit on continental judicial bodies such as the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, where she ended up as President of the Court.

“I have no doubt that Justice Akuffo will be a worthy successor to Chief Justice Wood and uphold jealously the independence of the Judiciary. I expect discipline, fairness, integrity and the continuing modernisation of judicial activities to be the hallmarks of her tenure as Chief Justice, if she is so endorsed by the constitutional bodies. It is important for the development of our nation that we have a Judiciary that commands the respect of the nation by the quality of its justice delivery,” the President said.

According to Article 144 (1) of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution: “The Chief Justice shall be appointed by the President acting in consultation with the Council of State and with the approval of Parliament.”

The current Chief Justice who has been in charge of Ghana’s Judicial Service for a decade Georgina Theodora Wood (appointed June 2007) bows out of office in June 2017.

Justice Akuffo becomes Ghana’s second female Chief Justice after Wood.

    Profile

Sophia A.B. Akuffo has been a Judge of the Supreme Court of Ghana for the past two decades.
Sophia Akuffo trained as a lawyer under Nana Akufo-Addo who had her Masters in Law (LLM) from the Havard University in the United States.

She has been a member of the Governing Committee of the Commonwealth Judicial Education Institute and the Chairperson of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Task Force.

In January 2006 she was elected one of the first judges of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights initially elected for two years, she was subsequently re-elected until 2014 and is at present serving as Vice-President of the Court.

She has written The Application of Information & Communication Technology in the Judicial Process – the Ghanaian Experience, a presentation to the African Judicial Network Ghana (2002).

One of her famous cases is when she presided over the Montie 3 in 2016.

  • US election 2016: Trump momentum forces new Clinton effort

As opinion polls suggest Donald Trump is gaining support, Hillary Clinton has been holding rallies in states that had been considered safe for the Democrats.

A BBC correspondent says both teams are now concentrating more on getting their supporters to vote, rather than swaying those undecided.

Thirty-seven million early ballots have already been cast.

US authorities say they are assessing the credibility of information on a possible al-Qaeda terror attack.

New York, Texas and Virginia are believed to be the potential targets mentioned in connection with a possible attack before election day on Tuesday, but a police spokesman said the information “lacks specificity”.

Officials say they regularly assess all possible threats before major events.

News of a possible attack came as both Mrs Clinton and Mr Trump made final pushes for support in battleground states across the US.

They both held rallies in Ohio and Pennsylvania on Friday, two states that may prove crucial on Tuesday.

Both candidates are due to campaign in Florida today. The state is seen as a key contest that could tip the election.

In Cleveland, Ohio, Mrs Clinton ended the day’s campaigning at a concert, where she was joined by the singer Beyonce and her husband, rapper Jay Z.

“We have unfinished work to do, more barriers to break, and with your help, a glass ceiling to crack once and for all,” Mrs Clinton said.

Addressing the crowd, Jay Z explained his support for Mrs Clinton. He said that though he did not have any “ill will” towards Mr Trump, the Republican’s conversation was “divisive”.

“That’s not an evolved soul to me, so he cannot be my president. He cannot be our president,” he said.

The free concert was part of a series of events put on by Mrs Clinton’s campaign as she aims to encourage greater African-American participation in the election.

Mr Trump, meanwhile, told a crowd of supporters in New Hampshire that his rival wants a “550% increase” on Syrian refugees allowed into the US.

“Her plan would mean generations of terrorism, extremism, and radicalism spreading into our schools and communities,” the Republican candidate said.

Earlier, at a rally in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Mrs Clinton said that her opponent was “unfit” for office because of his temperament and disparaging comments about women and minorities.

Mr Trump is currently ahead in Ohio, according to a state polling average by Real Clear Politics (RCP), while Mrs Clinton leads by a small margin in Pennsylvania.

In Florida, RCP’s poll average puts the Democratic candidate ahead, but poll analysis website FiveThirtyEight says Mr Trump has a 52.4% chance of winning the state’s 29 electoral votes.

National polls have suggested that the Republican candidate has gained substantial ground on his rival in the last week or so. That momentum also appears to have helped him in several key battleground states.

The Democratic nominee has had a tough few days after the FBI said last week it was looking into emails that may be connected to her use of a private email server while she was secretary of state in the Obama administration.

Mrs Clinton has said she is confident the new inquiry will not change the FBI’s original finding in July, which criticised her but cleared her of any illegal acts.

The Clinton camp have questioned the timing of the announcement. Two senior Democrats have now called for an investigation into the role of former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani, a Trump surrogate.

In an interview on Fox News on Friday morning, Mr Giuliani appeared to suggest he knew about the inquiry before it was announced, saying: “I had no role in it. Did I hear about it? You’re darn right I heard about it.”

Democratic Representatives Elijah Cummings and John Conyers wrote to the Justice Department on Friday afternoon asking for an investigation into the source of the information to Mr Giuliani.

“Leaking this information to former FBI officials as a conduit to the Trump campaign is equally intolerable,” they wrote.

But Mr Giuliani later denied having prior knowledge of the inquiry, telling CNN he had not received advance notice: “No, I’ve spoken to no current FBI agents.”

  • ADB donates towards Farmers Day

The Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) has presented to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture a dummy key to the three-bedroom house for this year’s National Best Farmer.

Making the presentation, the Group Head of Agricultural Finance, Mrs. Sylvia Nyante said the donation was in fulfillment of the bank’s pledge 15 years ago to consistently support the National Farmers Day event.
