Simone Biles put the finishing touches on one of the greatest Olympic Games performances by a gymnast, capturing her fourth gold of Rio 2016 with a show-stopping performance in the floor exercise on Tuesday (16 August).
On the final day of artistic gymnastics competition, the master tumbler from the USA won individual gold in the floor event, followed by team-mate Aly Raisman and Amy Tinkler of Great Britain at the Rio Olympic Arena.
Biles, who has won three straight world championship titles, completed an extraordinary stretch that included a team gold for the ‘Final Five’ as well as individual golds in the all-around and vault and bronze on balance beam. Her five medals tie the hardware haul of a USA woman at a single Olympic Games, and her four golds tie an Olympic record shared by three others.
Her score of 15.966 for today’s floor routine led Raisman’s tally of 15.500. They were they only two to score higher than 15 points.
Biles won individual bronze on 15 August despite a wobble and then a near-fall following otherwise routine elements on the beam, a rare mistake that prevented a potential clean sweep.
“I’m not disappointed in the medal that I received because anyone would love to have a bronze at an Olympic Games. I’m disappointed in the routine that I did. Not so much the entire routine just the front tuck because the rest of the routine was pretty good,” she said. “I didn’t even know my foot slipped until I got off the beam and they replayed it. I don’t really know what happened.”
