‘MPs serving as Ministers depleting parliament

Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, is calling for a review of the President’s authority to appoint lawmakers to serve as Ministers.

According to the Majority Leader, the practice is gradually depleting the effectiveness of parliamentary business since most of the appointees refuse to partake in parliamentary duties.

Speaking to the media at the closing ceremony of a one-day capacity building workshop for journalists on Wednesday, 1 November, Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu called for introspection to evaluate how the appointment of legislators is affecting parliamentary duties.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Suame said: “Parliamentary duties are increasingly getting depleted as a result of the development, and there is a need for a review to strengthen democratic processes in the country.”

Over the years, there have been suggestions that the Legislature should be totally separate from the Executive, but that has not yielded much fruits.
