Former FIFA President Joao Havelange dies at 100

Former FIFA president Joao Havelange has died today, Tuesday 16th August. He was 100 years old.

The sad news of the Brazilian’s death follows a series of health problems. This July, he was admitted to the Samaritan Hospital in Rio de Janeiro due to pneumonia.

Prior to that, in June 2014, he was hospitalized because of a respiratory-related infection and was forced to remain at the same hospital in Botafogo for four days until he was eventually discharged.

Meanwhile in 2012, Havelange’s health was seriously under-threat because of a bacterial infection, but he was duly treated and managed to recover.

Alas, unable to prevail, his battle with pneumonia was to prove his last.

The former athlete served as the head of FIFA from 1974 to 1998.

His tenure as president is the second longest in FIFA’s history, behind only that of Jules Rimet. Havelange was elected honorary president in 1998 but resigned in 2013.
