  • Uganda will prevail in Group D – Micho

Uganda coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic believes it is possible for the Cranes to progress from Group D of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations as they have been drawn to face giants Ghana, Egypt and Mali.

According to Micho, with good preparation and support from the country’s government, they will be able to get some positive results from Group D.

“Impossible is nothing. Possible is everything. We shall measure our values, test our character against good teams. We have a realistic chance to get good results and pass the group,” Micho said.

He added: “This is a tough and competitive group but I believe in the players and the team. I believe in the management of Fufa administration. I call upon the Government to give us support.

“The fans who have given us the immense and unconditional support whenever the Uganda Cranes play will be following the action after missing out in the last three finals.

“Egypt will come like wounded lions, while Ghana want to prove a point after missing in final to Cote D’Ivoire”.

Uganda Cranes will play Ghana on January 17, face Egypt on January 21 in Port Gentil before playing Mali in the last group game on the January 25, 2017 in Oyem.

  • Vogue endorses Hillary Clinton for US president

Vogue magazine has endorsed Hillary Clinton ahead of the US presidential election next month.

The Democratic candidate will face Republican rival Donald Trump when Americans go to the polls on 8 November.

In an editorial, the magazine said: “Vogue has no history of political endorsements.

“Given the profound stakes of this one, and the history that stands to be made, we feel that should change.”

The article reminds readers the magazine has previously profiled Clinton six times.

Vogue, which has been led by editor-in-chief Anna Wintour since 1988, added Clinton “knows the challenges working women face”.

“We understand that Clinton has not always been a perfect candidate, yet her fierce intelligence and considerable experience are reflected in policies and positions that are clear, sound, and hopeful,” the editorial said.

But the magazine criticised “the chaos and unpredictability and the sometimes appalling spectacle of this election season”.

On Wednesday evening, Clinton and Trump will go head to head in the final televised debate of the campaign season.

  • Trump ducks election result pledge

Republican Donald Trump has refused to commit to accepting the election result if he loses, in the final TV debate against Hillary Clinton.

“I will tell you at the time,” he told moderator Chris Wallace. For days he has claimed the election is “rigged”.

The Las Vegas debate continued the campaign’s bitter tone, with Mr Trump calling Mrs Clinton a “nasty woman”.

Polls show Mr Trump is losing in key battleground states after facing a slew of sexual assault allegations.

The candidates declined to shake hands before and after the political sparring, setting the tone for what would later become yet another debate marked by shouting and interrupting.

Mr Trump appealed to the Republican establishment by vowing to appoint Supreme Court justices with a “conservative bent” who would overturn a key ruling that made abortion legal in the US and protect gun rights.

He also stuck to his pledge to deport undocumented immigrants and secure US borders.

Meanwhile, Mrs Clinton firmly declared she would stand up for the LGBT community, defend abortion rights, focus on restoring the middle class and equal pay for women.

“The government has no business in the decisions that women make,” she said.

In one of the more striking moments, Mr Trump twice declined to say whether he would accept the election’s outcome, breaking with the country’s long-standing tradition of a losing candidate’s concession after the votes are counted.

“That’s horrifying,” Mrs Clinton shot back.

“He is denigrating and he is talking down our democracy. And I, for one, am appalled that somebody who is the nominee of one of our two major parties would take that kind of a position.”

Mr Trump’s response drew sharp criticism from Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, who said the candidate was “doing the party and country a great disservice by continuing to suggest the outcome of the election is out of his hands and ‘rigged’ against him,” according to a statement.

  • Election 2016: EIU predicts Akufo-Addo win

The Economic Intelligence Unit (EIU), a London-based organization, has predicted victory for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the forthcoming Ghana polls.

“We expect Nana Akufo-Addo and the NPP to be victorious at the December presidential and legislative elections, given popular frustration with Ghana’s poor economic performance under the recent National Democratic Congress administration,” said the EIU in its October report.

This prediction is the second from the EIU in the space of six months. Earlier in April, the EIU predicted a close win for the NPP.

The EIU continued that “Pre-election spending in 2016 will put pressure on the fiscal deficit target set in conjunction with the IMF, although the government will be more successful at resisting large-scale populist spending than in previous election years.”

This is not the first time the EIU is predicting the outcome of elections in the country – in February 2012, it predicted a win for the late President Prof. John Evans Mills, unfortunately he died before the elections were held.

  • Election 2016 will be best ever – EC boss

The chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Mrs. Charlotte Osei, has promised Ghana will record “one of the best elections ever” under her watch come December 7, 2016.

“With all the reforms that we have rolled out this year, we are certain as a commission that Ghana is going to have one of the best elections ever with higher levels of transparency, inclusiveness, and credibility and so we thank you and we look forward to working with you,” Mrs Osei said during the signing ceremony of an MoU with a delegation from the European Union on Tuesday.

The boss of the Electoral Management Body is optimistic the results of the general elections will be accepted by all, adding observer teams from various bodies will help make the poll credible.

“We welcome the work of the observer team and indeed we have had previous engagements in the past few months with the pre-assessment team that came earlier. We believe that this team, like the previous one, will help us in improving the quality of our elections and strengthen the integrity of our system.

“We will also be welcoming an observer team from the United States of America, Canada, EFID, the Electoral Institute for Sustainable Development in Africa, the African Union, and the ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) team,” Mrs. Osei added.

She stated: “We are very much looking forward to working with the teams and the very many applications we have received from domestic observer teams as well. For the domestic observer team, the Commission will still be coming out with guidelines for accreditation for that process and also a manual to guide the work of the domestic observer team.

“So, I am very happy that the EU has taken the step to sign a Memorandum of Understanding agreement with us, formally recognising the rights and obligations of both parties and we thank you for the support you have given to the elections so far, and which you continue to give to Ghana as a whole, and we look forward to working with you and with the team. We are very certain that the work of the observer mission will strengthen the integrity and the outcome and the acceptability of this year’s elections.

“With all the reforms that we have rolled out this year, we are certain as a commission that Ghana is going to have one of the best elections ever with higher levels of transparency, inclusiveness, and credibility and so we thank you and we look forward to working with you.”

  • Anas’ GJA award prejudicial – Dery’s lawyer

Lawyers for embattled high court judge, Justice Paul Dery, have described as prejudicial the crowning of Anas Aremeyaw Anas as the Journalist of the Year at the 21st GJA awards.

Justice Dery was one of the 34 judges indicted in the judicial corruption expose’ by Anas Aremeyaw Anas and his Tiger eye PI team.

Anas took home a Hyundai SUV as Journalist of the Year for the investigative piece that has resulted in the dismissal of several judicial staff and also led to the removal of about 20 judges from the bench.

But lawyer for Justice Dery, Nii Kpakpo Addo told Starr News the award to Anas is contemptuous.

“On the October 27,2016 the Supreme court of this republic is going to deliver judgement as to whether or not Tiger eye had the legal capacity to have petition the president for removal of my client…we also have ongoing matters at the high court which are challenging the method and legality of the ways and means by which these entities procured the so called evidence against our client and in the face of this serious on going proceedings, when you award these entities and individuals with an award, that seeks to validate their actions what you are doing is you are going behind the court in saying that despite these legal challenges against these persons in our opinion, whatever they have done is lawful and therefore they deserve recommendation.

“The actions of the GJA and its awards committee is pre-judicial to the ongoing cases in court …. if they did not know they are ongoing cases in court against them, then we have told them,” he narrated.

The exposed judicial staff included 22 Magistrates and 12 High Court Judges. Anas’ two-year investigative work captured them on video taking bribe to pervert justice.

  • Cancer propaganda against me won’t work – Akufo-Addo

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has stated that claims by members and “apologists” of the Mahama government that he is suffering from cancer will not derail his ambition.

According to Nana Akufo-Addo, in the face of an abysmal record in office, which has led to widespread hardship and suffering amongst the people, the only option left for the current administration is to embark on an abusive campaign against him, the latest being that he is suffering from cancer.

“First they said I was a drug addict, it didn’t work. They said I was sick, it didn’t work. They said I was too old, it didn’t work. They said I was a hunchback, it didn’t work. They said I was a dwarf, it didn’t work. They said I was in a wheelchair, it didn’t work. They said I am a murderer, it didn’t work.

“They said I will die in June, it didn’t work. They said I was a dictator, it didn’t work. They said I was intolerant, it didn’t work. They said I was violent, it didn’t work. They said I had a secret agenda to destabilise the country, it didn’t work. Now, they say I have cancer, it will not work,” Nana Akufo-Addo told members of the Bolgatanga Traditional Council in the Upper East region on Sunday, August 28 during his campaign tour.

Nana Akufo-Addo added, “it appears the only way the President will get a third term is when I am sick or I am dead. That is the only ground on which he will get his third term.”

Cataloguing a litany of President Mahama’s broken promises, Nana Akufo-Addo recounted how the NDC promised a “one time premium for the National Health Insurance Scheme,” and have reneged on this promise, 8 years after making it. Worse still, the NPP flagbearer noted that “not only did this promise not materialize, but they have collapsed the NHIS.”

He continued: “He (President Mahama) told us he was going to build 200 community day senior high schools. According to his Finance Minister, he has been able to build 9. He told us in 2012 that ‘dumsor’ will be over by 2013. We are in 2016, and ‘dumsor’ is still with us in Ghana. President Mahama was here in the North last week, and not once did he speak about SADA, because SADA has become a monumental failure.”

  • Bullion van attack: Police suspects indict another officer

The two Police officers who were arrested in connection with the GCB Bullion Van attack at Donkorkrom have accused another police corporal of aiding their escape.

The officers were picked up for their alleged roles in the robbery incident that led to the killing of the driver of the van.

They earlier escaped from custody but were subsequently arrested by their colleagues.

The development led to angry residents burning the Police station in the community amidst protest.

The officers who were arraigned before an Mpraeso magistrate court today fingered one Corporal Christopher Babudu, who was escorting them, of aiding their escape.

Meanwhile, the IGP has announced that the Police officers who helped in the arrest of the suspects have been promoted by the service.

“It is gratifying to note that the patrol team that effected the arrest of their colleagues have been promoted effective yesterday to their next ranks. In addition to maintaining general law and order in the country, one cannot lose sight of the fact that we have to also ensure that the December 2016 election will be delivered peacefully and successfully. On that score, I can assure the people of Ghana that we are committed to attaining that feat. With the support of all Ghanaians, we shall overcome,” the IGP noted.
