K’si: 4 roundabouts to go

The Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Atta, has directed the removal of four roundabouts on the Accra-Kumasi highway.

The roundabouts are Ejisu roundabout, Oduom roundabout, Boadi junction roundabout and the KNUST police station roundabout.

The Minister said the roundabouts which were constructed in 2006, should be removed within two months to reduce traffic jam and accidents on the highway.

Mr Amoako-Atta gave the directive during the first day of his three-day tour on some major roads in the Ashanti Region on Monday, October 23, 2017.

“You can see the way it was constructed with cobblestone, it appears that the road has been narrowed even though drivers were supposed to drive on these cobblestones but because of lack of education and understanding [they are not]. We have carried out some education but it has not gone down well. It is creating a lot of problems and a lot of accidents. I might say that during the constructions, these provisions were made for a good reason – for safety purposes – and at the moment, we think that the facilities have outrun their usefulness,” he stated.

“Engineering review has proven that we can remove them and there couldn’t be an appropriate occasion to give that directive than now. I’m, therefore, directing my chief director and all directors of agencies that within the next two months, at least before the end of the year, all these four roundabouts should be removed and the road straightened up. And by so doing, all these cobblestones will be removed and the entire stretch be constructed with asphalt and I believe that this will give ease of movement for vehicles and the problems that people have been encountering will be a thing of the past,” he added.

Mr Amoako-Atta further noted that the road will be redesigned with intersections and “it will be done to perfection and it will be done without sacrificing safety”.
